Life Skills
Khayalethu offers a variety of sporting and other activities in order to build life skills.
Community Service (Photo)
The boys are taught to give back to the community. Once a week, after school they do some form of community service. Some of the community service performed in the past has been: cleaning and caring for animals at the Animal Welfare; cleaning duties at a local clinic, gardening in and around an old age homes, taking the aged for walks in their wheel chairs - Even the smallest children fit in somewhere in a community service program i.e. the smaller boys would entertain the elderly by talking to them or performing smaller tasks.
Clinics do not have money for cleaning materials, so Khayalethu supplies it when the boys do community service. We also have to cover the cost of transport to and from the clinic.
On Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July 2010, our boys gave 67 minutes of their time, when they went to the Port Elizabeth Association for the Aged in Zwide, where they cleaned in and around the old age home and presented each member of the home with a t-shirt.
Adventure Based Education (Hiking)
Once a year, with the assistance of the Wildernis Foundation, Khayalethu boys go on their annual hiking trip to the Imbewu Trail. The hiking trails are difficult and teach the boys to persevere and work as a team. The boys also learn about nature and themselves. It builds self-esteem and also gives our staff the opportunity to interact with the boys on a more informal basis.
This outing is sponsored by the Wildernis Foundation as well as the Oliver Foundation.
Drama
Due to a lack of effective parenting, abuse and neglect, our boys struggle with a true sense of identity and expression. Niqui Cloete-Barras, a renowned Cabaret Artist, Script Writer and Drama coach has been providing this valuable service to our boys for many years.
Apart from the fun, it teaches them self expression and creative communication skills.
